Entrepreneurial
Aries corporate trainer and consultant Richard Hatch—dubbed by critics
as "The Man We Most Loved To Hate" and the least liked in the TV-audience
polls—won the $1 million prize Wednesday night (August 23), on CBS’s thirteen-week,
smash hit reality
TV show, Survivor.
Hatch’s
chart shows he’s a restless overachiever, loaded with ambition, who’s
driven to forcefully push obstacles aside and focus solely on accomplishing
his goals. On day one of the show—as one of sixteen castaways on a tiny
tropical island near Borneo—Rich predicted: "I've got the million-dollar
check written in my name." That kind of bold, cocky confidence is typical
of the spirited bravado of headstrong, determined Aries.
Beside his
Sun, his Venus is in Aries, implying that he’s a self-interested individualist
who possesses an autonomous disposition. Aries also excels in quick thinking
when self-preservation is at stake. Rich’s more controlling, ruthless
side—enabling him to resist emotionally bonding with the other players—is
better explained by his Moon and Saturn in Capricorn. This side of Richard
carefully thinks things through and can be quite a no-nonsense strategist
with excellent organizational ability. Capricorn also provides the endurance
and a dose of shrewdness that Aries lacks.
This combination
of go-getter Aries and power-testing Capricorn makes for very competitive
people who can be effectively single-minded while pursuing their desires.
Capricorn may appear cold and calculating, while Aries seems full of itself.
Yet, together, they welcome worthy challenges. In addition, Rich’s Mercury in Pisces, helping him to use intuitive feelings and persuasive power
to subtly manipulate key players behind the scenes, has an uncanny awareness
of human vulnerability (although Hatch is probably more sensitive and
sympathetic to others in real life, when he's not on a cutthroat game-show
where the stakes are high).
It's often
the case that an assertive exterior masks a vulnerable interior. There's
little need to act tough on the outside unless one is tender on the inside.
Mars in sensitive Cancer, as Richard has, often reflects a defensive side
whose aggression is about self-protection, rather than conquest. His Mercury
in another water sign, Pisces, can be interpreted as a mind that is rather
subtle and nuanced, able to shift its communication patterns to create
whatever image is most useful in the moment. These planets' placements
correspond well with the perception of Richard, by some, as a whiner.
In any astrological
chart, the position of the Moon's North Node is one of the most reliable
guides to a path of personal growth and development. Richard's North Node
is in calculating Virgo, in a close conjunction with the planet Pluto.
Pluto's critical placement shows that Rich's road to fulfillment passes
through the life-and-death extremes that are so familiar to this planet.
Pluto, the mythological Lord of the Underworld, is meant to take us to
the depths, to meet our demons and transform ourselves for the rebirth
to follow. Power, manipulation, secrecy and ultimately survival are what
it's all about.
Richard Hatch
has played the game perfectly, not just for millions of television viewers,
but for his own process of growth and change. Undoubtedly, the metamorphosis
has just begun for the new millionaire who has moved into the public spotlight
and will likely meet even greater challenges to come.
