Will
Cathy Be a Good Addition to Our Family?
Over a year
ago, we suffered the death of a very special cat. At the time, we had
three cats, all sisters, from two litters. The survivors will be ten years
old this year, and we had gradually been coming to the idea that it would
be nice to have the experienced cats train the next generation. Also,
they need to get off their butts—they are spending entirely too much time
sleeping!
We started
paying attention to cat rescue and vet referrals about a month before
this horary was asked. Since we had so much enjoyed our sibling cats,
we decided it would be a good thing to adopt two kittens from the same
litter. The day before this question was asked, we had found two boy kittens
that we really liked. After deciding to take them, we were off to the
pet store to get kitten food and toys!
While there,
my partner met and fell in love with Cathy, an approximately year-old
cat who had recently had a litter of kittens, and was also up for adoption.
My partner told the people in the store that if Cathy’s last kitten was
adopted, we might be interested in her. The next day the store called,
and she was available! This is when my partner asked the question.
In all horaries,
the person asking the question—the querent—is symbolized by the First
House, here ruled by Mercury, since it’s Virgo rising. That makes us Mercury.
Notice that since there is no reason to distinguish “us” as two separate
people for the purposes of this question, the First House represents us
both—our interests are the same in this case.
Cats are
small animals and pets, both Sixth House matters. So we will represent
Cathy by Saturn, the classical ruler of the Sixth House. (Aquarius
is the sign on the Sixth House cusp. Saturn is the traditional ruler of
Aquarius. I use only the ancient rulerships; not the modern ones.) Mercury
is retrograde in Cancer; it is not moving toward an aspect with Saturn.
(Notice that while they are in signs that are sextile, that sextile doesn’t
become exact before Mercury stations and changes direction. Aspects are
not allowed in horary if they have to change directions to complete them.)
We always
check the Moon in horary, because it often tells us the sequence of events.
Since the Moon also doesn’t complete traditional aspects (conjunction,
sextile, square, trine or opposition) with Mercury or Saturn either, this
means no future relationship with the cat. (Quincunxes are considered
too weak in horary to produce results.) So Cathy is not going to become
a part of the family.
She didn’t.
The following weekend, she was adopted again, but by my partner’s daughter.
Notice that Saturn rules both Fifth and Sixth Houses in this chart, and
so Saturn brings together the two houses!
The
Virgo Magnifying Glass: The Detailed Analysis
Is there
any way to distinguish between Cathy, the new cat, and the other cats
in the family? After all, we’ve covered our reactions, but what
about theirs? In classical astrology, the way to distinguish multiple
members of a class is to look at the triplicity rulers
of the cusp in question, in this case, the Sixth House of small animals
and pets (Aquarius).
Since this
chart question was asked during the day (meaning the Sun is located in
the Seventh through Twelfth Houses), then the first triplicity ruler for
the air signs is Saturn, the daytime triplicity ruler. The second triplicity
ruler of the air signs would be the nighttime triplicity ruler,
Mercury. (We would reverse the sequence of night and day if this question
had been asked at night.) The third triplicity ruler for the air signs
is the mixed ruler, Jupiter.
Now:
we actually have three sets of cats to consider. The first cats, determined
by age rank in the household, are our two senior cats, the ten-year-olds.
The second cats are the two boys that we had already decided to adopt.
The third cat is Cathy. Again, we look for interaction between the cats,
as represented by Saturn, Mercury and Jupiter. There are no approaching
aspects between either Saturn or Mercury with Jupiter. No approaching
aspect, no future relationship. The cats aren’t interacting with her either.
