Dear
Ralfee:
I
need help. I've been studying astrology for a little while and I just
can't seem to put it to any good use in my life. I know that astrology
works because my natal cart interpretation is more than just coincidentally
accurate in its description of me. Where do I go now?
I feel like
I am a star that doesn't have much power and I need to focus my light
on one particular aspect of my life, i.e., follow one path. I was born on January 21, 1970, at 6:56 am in Toronto, Ontario. I need to know what
purpose I am here for and once that is established, I can get behind it.
Can you please help me? What should I focus my talents on? In fact, what
are they?
Thank you
much.
Ian
Dear
Ian:
I wish I
could look at your birth chart and tell you the purpose of your life,
but I can't. Discovering the purpose of life takes a lifetime of living.
And while it's true some of us enter this world with what appears to be
a clear vision of who we are, most of us don't have a clue. The majority
of us muddle through life making it up as we go along, hoping eventually
to stumble upon what feels like the ultimate "Eureka" moment.
Even the
people we admire most for their achievements don't get born with that
clear vision. Einstein,
Ghandi, Margaret Sanger and the Beatles all became great by living life
deeply committed to being all they could be. Unfortunately, we translate
their accomplishments as a commitment to being all they were "supposed"
to be, forgetting or ignoring the complexity and contradictions of their
individual journeys.
In these
uncertain times, the need for meaning in day-to-day life makes us increasingly
hungry for purpose. A just-tell-me-what-to-do-and-I'll-do-it-attitude
is an attempt to clear the static and make life easier. The new age movement,
especially, speaks the language of soul-mission, often implying there
is some computer printout in the etheric realms, specifically designating
what each of us—and here's that word, again—is supposed to do.
Yet the absence
of a definitive description of who or what we should be is liberating.
When we give up the notion of a set plan, we're free to dive into life,
discovering who we are through living every day. And this is where astrology
becomes a very useful tool for actualizing our potential. Working with
our birth chart allows us to deepen our self-awareness, providing us with
valuable information about our challenges and our gifts.
What's most
surprising to me about your question, Ian, is that you feel like a "star
that doesn't have much power." Your birth chart suggests just the
opposite—tremendous personal power. Accessing that innate dynamic force
is complicated by several difficult planetary configurations, but these
obstacles are not impossible to overcome.
It's likely
the challenges in your chart are the reason you're feeling frustrated
with the way your life is unfolding. So let's explore the difficulties first.
Your birth
chart contains a Pluto-Mars opposition. Pluto is the planet of power.
Mars is the planet of self-assertion. When they oppose each other, personal
ambition feels thwarted. Often, as a remedy for that frustration, a Pluto-Mars
opposition plays out as the tendency to apply sheer brute force as a way
of attaining your goals. Yet this opposition can also manifest as the
collapse of the self, particularly in the face of some greater power.
Your Pluto-Mars
opposition also speaks to a difficult relationship with your father. Early
in life, you would have recognized his need to be in control. Your Mars
is in the highly sensitive sign of Pisces, making it easier for you to
capitulate to his will in order to survive. What's more, if your father
was mean or cruel, you may have developed a negative belief system about
what it means to be powerful. Thus the fear of imitating his behavior
may be what's keeping you from opening up full throttle on your own power.
You have a difficult
t-square that signals themes of self-esteem. Saturn opposes Jupiter as it simultaneously
squares your Sun-Venus conjunction in Aquarius. An Aquarius Sun needs
tremendous personal freedom. The close conjunction of Venus, who among
her many domains, signifies values, amplifies this need to be your own
person.
Unfortunately,
Saturn squelches that free-spirited energy. Saturn sits in your Third
House of communication, inhibiting the easy expression of your opinions.
A Saturn-Sun square often indicates a critical or stern father. What's
more, Saturn opposes your Jupiter in the Ninth House. Jupiter is the planet
of expansion, and when it's in the Ninth House it wants to explore as
many varying belief systems as possible. Your father's heavy hand may
have made you self-conscious about your appetite for information.
Fortunately,
your birth chart contains tremendous creativity, sensitivity, abundant
energy and a talent for transformation.
Your natal
Pluto in Virgo trines your Sun-Venus conjunction in Aquarius. A Pluto-Sun
trine bestows the gifts of physical strength and stamina. It also indicates
the qualities of leadership. If you're worried about abusing your power,
you'll stay stagnant in frustration. If you're open to learning how to
use your power wisely, this trine provides the energy to accomplish anything
you set your mind to.
More importantly,
this Pluto-Sun trine signals a potential for transformational living,
opening up a capacity for change. When we embrace change, we move out
of stuck situations with greater ease. This talent for transformation
is heightened by a Uranus-Sun trine. Uranus is the planet of innovation,
and when it supports the Sun it feeds a revolutionary spirit, interested
in reforming whatever needs to shift. This trine allows you to make sudden
turns toward personal freedom.
But that's
not all. Pluto also trines Venus. Venus is a highly creative force interested
in expressing her talents through artistic endeavors. If you haven't already
discovered a form of self-expression that brings you joy, please keep
searching for an art or a craft capable of making your heart sing. I'm
not saying you'll become the next Picasso. That's not the point. When
we work our creative muscles, we discover who we are and in the process
learn a great deal about life and living.
One more
bit: Your Moon in Cancer trines your Mars making you highly empathetic.
Learning to handle psychic sensitivity isn't an easy process. It takes
time and experience. Yet this gift is worth exploring. You don't have
to become a psychic to utilize this talent. Sensitivity shows its value
in many ways and is a particularly handy tool for an artist.
Focus your
quest for purpose on greater self-discovery, Ian, and your search will
branch out to embrace a variety of possibilities. Delve creatively. Face
your power issues. Be courageous about being yourself. Dare to dream,
even if no one else shares your vision. When we believe in ourselves,
our spirit thrives. And the light of our personal passion illuminates
the path ahead.
