Response
from Enid Newberg,
Kepler College President
To the Boston
Herald Editor:
Having read
Dr. Silber's criticism of Kepler College in the May 16th issue of the
Boston Herald ("Silliness Under Seattle Stars"), I must respond.
It is very
disappointing to see someone of Dr. Silber's credentials denigrate the
efforts of Kepler College by playing to emotion rather than fact.
Astrology played a significant role in the development of civilizations
worldwide and continues to do so in modern culture. Therefore a college is
a totally appropriate place to explore what astrology claims and what
astrologers do. Because of the prevailing antipathy towards astrology in
most academic setting, this has not been done. Kepler College was founded
to fill this vacuum. Included as an integral part of the curriculum is a
critical analysis of the development of intellectual thought which
includes the contributions of astrology as well as research into the
various astrological traditions and how they have been applied.
In the past
30 years, astrology and astrological services have grown significantly. In
the United States, it is currently a multi-million dollar business.
Clients of astrologers come from all walks of life, including presidents
and prime ministers. I think it is far sillier to continue to exclude
astrology as an appropriate field of academic study than to create a
College where this complex system of symbolic thought can be thoroughly
examined in an open-minded manner.
Enid
Newberg,
President Kepler College of Astrological Arts & Sciences
