Obama's Road Trip

On most issues, and especially concerning the economy, Barack Obama holds a commanding lead over rival John McCain. Only in foreign policy does McCain hold an advantage. This week, as Obama meets with U.S. allies across the global village, he aims to shore up his standing in international affairs and counter the widespread notion that he's an idealistic dreamer who wants to charm America's enemies.

Obama's opinions and mental attitude are shaped by his Mercury, which is found in imperialistic Leo, just as George W. Bush's Mercury is. The difference between the two can be seen in Mercury's network of aspects. Bush's Mercury conjunct Pluto is highly focused, often to the point of obsession, and tends to divide the world into good and evil. As Bush has said, "I don't do nuance."

Obama's multi-aspected Mercury is given a philosophical spin via the opposition to Jupiter and a fluid, intellectual facet by the sextile to his Gemini Moon. Most relevant to his foreign policy views is the square to Neptune in the Ninth House of Foreign Affairs. Mercury square Neptune is sensitive to people's aspirations, and according to Neptune's more nebulous agenda, sees the world as complex and ambiguous.

The ruler of Obama's Ninth House (with Scorpio on the cusp) is Pluto. At the moment, transiting Saturn is nearing an exact conjunction with his Pluto, and will become exact as he concludes his trip. Saturn-to-Pluto underscores the importance of his tour, especially since his natal Pluto also rules his Midheaven, representing his global reputation. Saturn-to-Pluto represents the dramatic restructuring or morphing of his political campaign onto the world stage.

Crop Circle Depicts 2012

Every year the crop circle formations that appear in England are eagerly anticipated, as they have grown increasingly complex and beautiful. The formation that appeared last week* near Avebury Manor is an obvious representation of our solar system, with the nine planets orbiting the large Sun in the center. The planets' positions correspond to an actual date, which is December 21, 2012—the end of the Mayan calendar.

Astrologically, a horoscope set for the Winter Solstice on December 21, 2012 (Washington D.C.) shows several important outer planet configurations, underscoring the momentous significance of that time. As described in this column recently (NewsScope May 4, 2008), the signature event for 2012 is the Uranus-Pluto square, which is exceptionally dynamic due to their placements in Aries and Capricorn. The last time Uranus and Pluto were in aspect was in the revolutionary 1960s.

Specific to December 21, 2012, Jupiter, Saturn and Pluto are all at 8º of their respective signs (Gemini, Scorpio and Capricorn), so that they form an exceptionally tight configuration. This trio is all the more powerful since it's precisely in line with the U.S. Ascendant at 8º Scorpio and the U.S. Uranus at 8º Gemini. These kinds of precise, multi-planetary alignments create spectacular events.

The overlay indicates that the U.S. government will be a key player as it attempts to manage (Saturn) whatever crisis is unfolding at the time. Action is also evident, since Mars at 27º Capricorn is exactly conjunct the U.S. Pluto, which reflects the marshaling (Mars) of U.S. power (Pluto). While one could speculate endlessly about various scenarios depicted by these planets, more intriguing is the connection between the mysterious Circle Makers and 2012?

Batman's Origins

On the heels of Superman's smashing success, artist Bob Kane created "The Bat-Man," the world's first conflicted superhero, in 1939. The character was inspired by the masked hero Zorro and Leonardo da Vinci's bat-like flying machine. The Caped Crusader made his debut on May 1, 1939 in Detective Comics #27, as the struggle between good and evil was beginning in World War II.

A horoscope drawn for this moment (noon, New York City) reveals the zeitgeist of the time, as well as Batman's evolution into radio, television, and films. The Sun in Taurus conjunct Uranus reflects Bruce Wayne's (Batman's alter ego) status as an independent, wealthy industrialist. The superhero planet Mars is dignified in Capricorn, and so Batman fights for justice and truth.

But this Mars is much afflicted by an opposition to Pluto and a square from Saturn, accounting for his battles with powerful enemies, as well as his own internal strife. Then, the trines to Uranus and Neptune fortify his position on the right side of the law, since they are all in practical, no-nonsense earth signs. Mars aspecting all four of the outer planets signifies Batman's action-oriented, trans-generational, multi-dimensional struggles.

Heath Ledger (April 4, 1979; see NewsScope January 28, 2008), the star of the current horror movie The Dark Knight, was born with his Aries Sun exactly conjunct the Batman Mercury. Numerous other precise intra-aspects mark him as this era's incarnation of evil and chaos. Especially telling is Ledger's Jupiter conjunct the Batman Pluto, so that he had the opportunity and good fortune to portray Pluto's dark side.
