Saturn opposite Uranus: Taking it Personally

Last week’s second opposition of stabilizing Saturn and revolutionary Uranus reflects the ongoing tug-of-war among politicians charged with getting the economy back on track. Obama’s election during the first opposition on November 4 suggests that the push-pull between new ideas and entrenched interests will be a major theme of his term in office, at least until the final Saturn-Uranus opposition in July 2010. Regardless of what side of the political fence you’re on, it’s understandable to feel frustrated with the laborious legislative process. Compromise looks less like a desire to consider opposing points of view and meet harmoniously in the middle than a childish turf war over power, privilege and prestige. We can interpret this as a failure of government due to the greed and callousness of those in it. However, blaming others, in spite of the evidence against them, is rarely the road to higher consciousness. If you stand on the right where business is always right, on the left where government is the champion of our common interests, or somewhere in the middle, it’s time to step out of the political circle and address Saturn and Uranus in your own life.

Every person on Earth exists in the middle of this opposition of the old and the new. The undercurrents of change that threaten our very way of life shake each of us. And it is within ourselves, as individuals, where we have the most power to do something about it. Leadership can be led by the people if we each do our part to participate in the energetic process, rather than standing on the sidelines and taking potshots at the powers that be. Take note of those places in your life where Saturn has gone too far or grown too feeble, where you have grown rigid and brittle, leaving you stuck in the impotence of outmoded beliefs. Watch where you are tight in your actions and expectations for those are Saturn’s weak points, the places where adherence to the past narrows options for the future. Reflect on those places where Saturn is effective, where you meet your responsibilities with grace and have earned respect through commitment and competence. Pay attention to how Uranus works in your life, where you are fresh and innovative or nervous and disjointed. In what areas are you able to step out of the box and act or think independently? Do you recognize these as talents that make you more inventive and interesting or are they taboos that alienate you from others?

Get to know Saturn and Uranus within yourself, feeling Saturn’s edge of authority and need for control as well as Uranus’ instinct for breaking the rules. They are safety and originality, certainty and surprise that we tend to view as totally different energies. But they are, in fact, two ends of the same pole: order and chaos, stagnation and transformation. As you pay attention to your own shifts from one to the other in different areas of life you contribute to our collective awareness of what we are facing. When you see the connections between Saturn and Uranus in yourself and can move gracefully between them, we are using this opposition constructively. Instead of chaos and destruction, we can create an orderly advance into the next stage of human existence where we honor the uniqueness of each individual and honor it as a contribution to the well being of all.
