The Quixotic Ex-Governor: Sarah Palin continued to live up the unconventional ways of her Aquarius Sun sign by announcing her resignation as Governor of Alaska. Many pundits see this as her opportunity to earn more cash giving speeches than she can earn as Governor and a way to become a full-time campaigner for the GOP presidential nomination in 2012. Some have suggested, though, that Palin is trying to get out of the way before ethics charges damage her political career. Whatever the reasoning behind this surprising move, it gives us another chance to look at her fascinating birth chart.
Born on February 11, 1964 in Sandpoint, Idaho (no birth time published), Sarah has the Sun in quirky Aquarius, a sign better known for progressive leanings than conservative ones. But Dick Cheney and Ronald Reagan showed that Aquarians can also fall on the right side of the political spectrum. What makes Palin’s chart so interesting are the close conjunctions of Mars and Saturn to her Sun. This hard-nosed pair reflects the toughness and ambition that has taken her so far. Still, her shifts from attack dog to wounded puppy are shown by supersensitive Neptune’s stressful square to her Sun.
Transiting (current) Jupiter, Neptune and Chiron are traveling together close to Palin’s Sun, Mars and Saturn. Neptune (dissolution) on Saturn is often a time when authority is surrendered. For some it’s about compassion for oneself, a lightening of the load and a dropping of defenses. For others it’s a signal of confusion and an abrogation of responsibility. Jupiter’s presence expands whatever it touches, so the grandeur of self-importance could be a motivating factor.
It’s uncommon for a Sun-Saturn person to surrender a hard-earned position and walk away from a commitment. Sarah Palin is proving to be an unconventional politician by making this radical move. But it’s possible that even she is not completely clear about her motivations. When Neptune comes calling, which is rather infrequent, the clouds of illusion can muddle the mind and what we think we see is not usually what we get. The higher side of this planet is idealism. If Palin is truly motivated by her altruistic urges, this could be a clever move. If she’s less than forthcoming, however, she may have begun a long, slow exit from the political stage.
