Break on Through to the Other Side:
The Large Hadron Collider is the world’s biggest atom smasher. The 10 billion dollar piece of machinery was shut down due to electrical problems within days of its startup in September 2008. It was designed to release sub-atomic particles resulting from particle collisions at super high speeds in its 17-mile tunnel underneath the French-Swiss border. On Friday, November 19, the collider resumed operation and may finally fulfill its purpose, which is to unlock secrets of the universe by discovering its underlying matter. The Moon was in earthy Capricorn and close to transformational Pluto when Hadron came back to life. Pluto is not only the mythological Lord of the Underworld, but is also the astrological symbol of secrecy. It is a kind of secret code that, when revealed, releases enormous amounts of energy. Pluto’s presence in Capricorn from January 2008 until March 2023 is likely to be a period in which major breakthroughs in understanding the fundamental makeup of matter will occur. Yet this story, especially right now, is also about penetrating the mysteries of human existence.
The recent (and recently reported) 90-degree square between Pluto and Saturn represents a period (now through August 2010) in which we may breach the walls of reality as we know it. It’s true that there may be additional struggles for survival with this demanding aspect, yet Hadron is a reminder that the human quest for discovery is far from over. While physicists are breaking down the limits of matter by smashing atoms the rest of us may be close to breaking through walls of consciousness to expose unknown truths about ourselves. The pressures of these times bring pain and suffering but also shift the ground upon which we stand, enabling us to see ourselves differently. This weight usually has a contracting effect, reducing our options under the demands of financial stress. However, these very same forces can help us to crack open the shells of ignorance that keep us from knowing who we really are.
Saturn in Libra reframes relationships while Pluto in Capricorn focuses on material survival. The squares between them may leave us feeling as if we’re stuck in a giant underground tunnel in a strange land. Yet we are reminded that great change often occurs during the darkest circumstances. The issues we face are more than short-term economic ones. There are long-term environmental ones that may determine whether we can live comfortably on this planet. Some futurists believe that humanity must move up or move out. This means that we move our consciousness up to a higher level of awareness and change our relationships with one another and the earth or that we move on, ending our journey on this planet.
We can use the collisions we encounter in our lives to shatter our old ideas about who we are and how life works. With a bit of scientific detachment, aka objectivity, we may be surprised and enlightened by what we discover. Instead of counting every setback and wound as a loss, we can use them to find a different perspective. The data we collect from painful journeys may not make sense at first, but if we keep our minds and hearts open we will find the way to move up and evolve into the next stage instead of human history instead of ending the story now.
