Hurricane Rita Hits U.S. Pluto Line

Hurricane Rita arrived with a confluence of outer planet hits to the U.S. Scorpio Rising horoscope. Transiting Neptune, the natural ruler of inundations, remains on the Fourth House  cusp, while the other outer planets were in relatively the same positions as when Katrina hit. Over the weekend Jupiter moved into place. Only the impossible Gemini Rising* chart (2:23 am) has similar flooding indications since transiting Neptune is on that chart's Midheaven.

As the most massive evacuation in U.S. history unfolded, transiting Saturn was exactly squaring the Scorpio Ascendant. Saturn's connection to the Scorpio Rising chart's angles describes serious events with grave long-term consequences. Saturn was also forming close, hard aspects to the Scorpio Rising angles during Hurricanes Andrew and Camille, two of the most devastating hurricanes of the twentieth century.

Pluto, the ruler of the Scorpio Rising horoscope, was receiving two simultaneous hits. Transiting Chiron is slowing to a near stop as it prepares to turn direct while exactly conjunct the U.S. Pluto. Meanwhile, transiting Jupiter is heading into a square to the U.S. Mercury-Pluto polarity, creating a double whammy situation for the nation. Pluto's activation in the Third House of travel reflects the most massive evacuation in U.S. history.

Using the technique of Astro*Carto*Graphy, Pluto projected onto the U.S. map is a vertical line that begins in the south, right on the Louisiana-Texas border. The Mercury line runs parallel to the Pluto line, and begins at the southern tip of Texas, running north through San Antonio and just west of Dallas. The gulf region described by the Mercury-Pluto lines is the exact area where Hurricane Rita struck.

Bush Drinking?

The National Enquirer reported last week that President Bush has started drinking again. Ordinarily, this column wouldn't take these reports too seriously, except that the President's horoscope is showing the signs of deep stress that might accompany falling off the wagon. Plus, Newsweek magazine and other journalists** are picking up on this theme as the pressures of the top job mount.

Bush was born (July 6, 1946; 7:26 am; New Haven, CT) with his Sun and Saturn in the Twelfth House, giving him a deep need for extended periods of quiet time to regenerate his energies. Currently, the most significant factor is transiting Saturn conjunct Bush's Leo Ascendant, which forces him to assume the heavy burdens of responsibility that go along with being the president.

An afflicted—or more euphemistically, a "dynamic"—Neptune is most often associated with alcoholism. Bush's Sun squares Neptune, which gives a strong inclination to escape the harshness of life. Bush quit alcohol cold turkey on his 40th birthday, as transiting Neptune was squaring his natal Neptune, and transiting Uranus opposed his natal Uranus. This is the classic mid-life crisis that leads to fundamental changes of direction.

Neptune resides in Bush's Third House of mental attitude, where it can bring inspired plans or even spiritually-based reasoning. However, under stress, this position tends to mangle spoken words and distort mental clarity. Why did Bush take five days to respond to Hurricane Katrina? Over the past two weeks he's tried to make up for that misstep, but the stress is showing.

The Six Million Dollar Baby

Britney Spears gave birth to a baby boy by C-section on September 14, just before 1 pm in a Santa Monica hospital. The boy, named Sean Preston Spears Federline, is already becoming a media sensation, since the mother and father have signed publicity deals totaling some $6 million for the exclusive photos and video of his first week of life.

Sean Preston came into this world with the Moon, representing the mother, in Aquarius and Sagittarius Rising. Britney Spears (December 2, 1981; 1:30 am; Mahon, GA) was also born with the Moon in Aquarius and her Sun in Sagittarius where it forms an exact conjunction with Sean's Ascendant. These two connections are only one of many influential planetary connections between mother and son.

Preston's Sun-Mercury conjunction in Virgo squares Pluto near the Ascendant, giving intense analytical or critical mental abilities. This aspect is driven to understand power, and often must experience exploitation or victimization before assuming personal control. Since Britney's Mars is closely conjunct Sean Preston's Sun, she quite naturally promotes him, and will continue to push him in very specific directions.

With Sean's prominent Pluto placement, the astrologer might question how this will psychologically affect his self-esteem. The powerful influence of Pluto over his own identity (Sun) indicates a perspective problem in that he may take a long time before discovering his own path. John Kennedy Jr. had the same dilemma, since he also had his Sun square Pluto, with Pluto near the Ascendant.

*The Gemini Rising chart originates from Luke Broughton in 1861, who placed Uranus, as the natural ruler of revolutions, on the Ascendant. It was not meant to be a timed chart (especially since Uranus wasn't even discovered until 1781), but a symbolic representation of the event.
