Cosmic Café Part Three:
Saturn Lays Down the Law

The serious military man I recognized as Saturn sat quietly at the bar, staring straight ahead. I glanced sideways at him and considered the physical form he'd chosen to "wear"—thick glasses, receding hairline, and a meticulously clean and well-pressed uniform. I thought of speaking, but decided against it. He looked awfully serious—in fact, his very presence made me sit up even straighter in my chair. Suddenly, he turned to me, grimacing at the sound of Jupiter's hearty laughter. "So how are you doing with your finances?"

I almost choked on a sip of wine. I'm a Sagittarian, after all, and my kind isn't notoriously good at budgeting anything. "I'm sorry?"

"Your money. How's it going?" He was staring straight at me, so I knew avoiding the question wasn't an option—but I also wasn't very comfortable discussing money matters in public. My Venus is in my Twelfth House, a place where we hide what's not easy for us to express. I licked my lips and answered him—softly. "Um, well, things are good, I guess. Why?"

He smiled—at least, I think that's what it was—and said, "Because it's my job to check, as you know, my dear." I had to agree because I understood perfectly what he was talking about. Saturn is the planet of discipline, rules and structure. The sign he's moving through at the moment shows where and how we're going to be tested. Since Saturn is in Taurus and Taurus is the sign that's in charge of money, possessions and, in general, what we "hold dear" or value, it certainly was his job to check. But that didn't mean I was happy about it. Who looks forward to report cards?

"Well, I'm working a lot, but things are still a little tight. But that's okay," I quickly added. "I'm not afraid to work hard."

He tossed me a glance I'll swear was sarcastic and said "Really? What do you call hard?”

I felt a surge of heat race up my back. I placed my glass carefully in the center of my cocktail napkin and turned toward him with an attitude. I was going to tell him that I knew quite well what hard work was, since I'd started working at fifteen, often had as many as three jobs at once and hadn't ever been unemployed. Fortunately, a large hand on my shoulder stopped me from alienating a planet it's really not wise to alienate. It was Uncle Jupiter, once again saving me at the exact, perfect time.

Saved by Jupiter

Jupiter threw a handful of hundreds on the bar, and said, "She's fine, Saturn. See? I take care of my girl." Fortunately for me, Jupiter was also in his Taurus outfit, and feeling even more generous than usual, so there really wasn't much Saturn could say.

"They can't rely on gifts forever, Jupiter," the serious man said. "It's wonderful that you spoil them, but they need to learn to take care of themselves. Hard work builds character. When you work hard for your money, you appreciate it, and you learn to take care of it. That's a gift you can't give them."

The jolly man behind me rolled his eyes, and laughed. "You know, old buddy, you really should lighten up. When was the last time you took a vacation?"

Saturn finished his coffee and stood up. "I take holidays when I earn them—not like others I know." He left the bar, and walked stiffly up the street and into the darkness alone.
