The Fall of Mercurial Moammar Gadhafi
As I’m writing this it appears that the Libyan government of Moammar Gadhafi is about to fall. Gadhafi came to power in a military coup on September 3, 1969, establishing the birth chart of his regime. The charts of nations work similarly to those of individuals, describing characteristics and cycles based on the planets’ positions at their inception. Often, though, it’s difficult to determine which date and time to choose as changes of government are usually series of events rather than the singular act of first breath that is used for a human birth chart. Still, the brilliant scholar Dr. Nicholas Campion has done the research for us and published his results in “The Book of World Horoscopes,” which is the basis of this article.
Col. Gadhafi is often described as “mercurial,” a trait strongly present in the regime’s horoscope and in his own natal chart. He was born on June 7, 1942 with five planets in Mercury-ruled Gemini. The 1969 regime chart has the Sun in Virgo and Moon in Gemini, both associated with the speedy messenger planet. The national chart’s Mercury is in airy Libra, theoretically associated with objectivity and justice. However, its close conjunction to volatile Uranus symbolizes a kind of schizophrenic genius that can quickly veer from innovation to madness. Another telling factor in this chart is repressive Pluto’s conjunction with the karmic Lunar South Node in Virgo. This represents a dark force of absolute control that likely led to Gadhafi’s downfall.
The current positions of the planets are known as transits and the significant geometric patterns they form with a birth chart are called aspects, which signal shifts in a person or organization’s life. There is no published time of birth for Gadhafi but the Moon was almost certainly in the early degrees of Aries, which is a highly activated point these days. The national chart’s Mercury at 3 Libra is currently opposed exactly by revolutionary Uranus at 3 Aries. Its Uranus at 5 Libra finds transformational Pluto precisely 90-degrees away (a stressful square) at 5 Capricorn. Remember, it’s the approaching mutual square between transiting Uranus and Pluto, exact 2012-15, that represents the powerfully transformational period we’re entering.
So now that the Arab spring is continuing into the summer, it’s reasonable to wonder where all these changes are taking us. Is Syria’s second generation dictator the next to go? And, more importantly, will these grass roots revolutions give rise to a democratized Islamic world or will these dictatorships eventually be replaced by reactionary religious forces? Considering the volatility of the approaching Uranus-Pluto square with its antecedents in the turbulent 1960s, it’s probable that extreme shifts toward freedom and repression are both likely. While the madness of one murderous Norwegian was the act of a single person, his response echoed a reactive fear against immigration that is much more widespread. In some ways, it can be argued that the resurgence of conservative politics in the United States was a reaction to the liberation movements of the 1960s. Yet we can only hope that no matter where we stand in the political spectrum that a miraculous breakthrough in the transformational days and years ahead will be a newfound freedom from the cycles of violence that have dotted so much of human history.
