Chiron was discovered in 1977 between the orbits of Saturn and Uranus. This small body has been called a planetoid and an asteroid. In either case, astrologers have found it to be useful in understanding wounds and how we can heal them. Chiron, a centaur in mythology, was known as the wounded healer. It represents the capacity to heal through the compassion and wisdom borne of one's own suffering.

Chiron's entry into Pisces, arguably the most compassionate sign of the zodiac, is a period when vulnerability rises closer to the surface. This can make us more aware of our own wounds as well as those of other living creatures. While Chiron's passage through Aquarius has been a period of intellectual awareness of suffering, its shift into Pisces brings these notions down from the head and into our very souls. This is an invitation to empahy as the boundaries between us begin to melt.

The challenge, though, is to be more open to recognizing pain without becoming identified as victims. It is possible to suffer nobly, that is to be sensitive to our own and others' wounds without defining this as punishment or failure. The spiritual qualities of Pisces enable us to recognize that there is a purpose for every experience, even the most difficult ones. Victims are helpless subjects of forces beyond their control, which leaves them powerless. Recognizing that the human condition includes both joy and suffering enables us to experience the full spectrum of emotions without blaming ourselves or others. Chiron in Pisces is a reminder that sensitivity can be a doorway to awareness rather than an escape route from responsibility.
